Primarily
self taught, Lex Munson's varied career in the arts has ranged from
the publication of his first note card series at age 17 to the creation
of a continuous 450' long, 5,000 square foot mural on canvas depicting
Califomia's Gold Rush Era.At age 19 Munson was called into the Viet Nam conflict, where his
pen and ink work flourished until 1971 when he moved to Japan. Traveling
and painting, he developed an appreciation of watercolor and Oriental
art "The exquisite simplicity of the art impressed and inspired
me. The classic interpretations of misty mountains and waterfalls
recalled Yosemite's essence, and became part of my artistic expressions."
In 1973 he returned to the California foothills near Yosemite Park
and opened his design and art studio. He developed and began teaching
his unique 'Dynamic Wet Into Wet Watercolor Techniques'. These classes
and demonstrations have continued through today. They have evolved
into his 'Art Adventures' which is a series of 3-7 day outdoor workshops.
Locations and themes have included 'Hike, Bike and Paint Yosemite',
'Live at a Lighthouse', 'Paddle & Paint Raft Trips', and 'High
Sierra Ghost Town Adventure'.
Most of Lex Munson's paintings are visions, painted without reference
materials, and based on his childhood in the peaceful, spiritual
embrace of Yosemite Valley. "I believe that I have been given
a gift. My purpose is to pass on and share the spiritual essence
of Yosemite and the High Country through my paintings."
Lex Munson has been a professional artist and designer for thirty
